DPF Cleaning FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

**Question 1: What is a DPF filter?**

Answer 1: A DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is a device installed in diesel vehicles to reduce emissions by trapping soot and ash particles from the exhaust gas.

**Q2: Why is cleaning a DPF filter important?**

A2: Regular cleaning is crucial to maintain the efficiency and longevity of the DPF filter. Accumulated particles can block the filter, leading to reduced performance and potential damage.

**Q3: How often should a DPF filter be cleaned?**

A3: The cleaning frequency depends on the vehicle's usage and type. Commercial Semi Trucks typically last much longer then automobiles or light duty trucks who have a recommended cleaning every 10,000 to 15,000 miles. In a perfect world, Tractor trailers DPF filters would be cleaned ever 6 months but we're lucky if companies do it every 12 months. By the 24th month, trucks are probably getting stranded on the side of the road or throwing many engine codes. The filter may not even survive one cleaning cycle because of all the added wear and tear taken from driving with a clogged filter for so long. Do NOT drive more then a year without cleaning.

**Q4: What are the common methods for cleaning a DPF filter?**

A4: The primary method is by putting the filters into an industrial oven at over 800 Degrees Fahrenheit. Common methods include manual cleaning, where the filter is removed and cleaned with special chemicals and tools, followed by a forced regeneration. A forced regen is where the vehicle's engine is run at a specific RPM to burn off accumulated particles.

**Q5: Can I remove a DPF filter myself?**

A5: While it's possible for experienced DIY enthusiasts, it's generally recommended to have a professional handle the removal due to the complexity and potential for damage. Here is a decent walkthrough video

**Q6: How is a DPF filter reinstalled?**

A6: Reinstallation is the reverse process of removal. Ensure all gaskets / seals and connections are secure and intact, and the filter is properly aligned and connected to the exhaust system. Demo here

**Q7: What should I be cautious of when reinstalling a DPF filter?**

A7: Ensure the filter is correctly positioned and the seals are intact. THE MOST Important part of the Filter install is to make sure the seal between the round edge of the filter and the round edge you clamp it to in the ONE Box have to be kissing perfectly!!! Leave 0 gap.

Improper installation can lead to leaks, reduced efficiency, and potential engine damage. Oh yeah, don't forget about the $600 of wasted clamps you needed to buy for every new filter install.

**Q8: Are there legal considerations with DPF removal?**

A8: Yes, in many regions, removing a DPF filter is illegal and can lead to fines and failed vehicle inspections. It's essential to understand and comply with local regulations.

**Q9: Can a damaged DPF filter be repaired?**

A9: It's rare but some damages can be repaired, it depends on the extent of the damage. Consult with a professional to assess the condition of your DPF filter. Most places wont bother. We do not move forward with the cleaning if the filter is found to be damaged.
